Review of Father Damien Art Sale Reported by Nobuko Fushimi

Resurrection of the Lord Parish (Waipio Gentry)
Remember how Lucy walked into an ordinary wardrobe that led her into the magical realm of Narnia? Well, this past weekend, if you had wandered into our conference room, you would have had the same sensation of stumbling into that magical world, only what awaited you were not centaurs or the White Witch, but a stunning collection of art work. Our parish had our first Art Sale on August 15 & 16 organized by our parishioner, Bob Mace. Half the proceeds will go to Resurrection of the Lord building fund, and the other half to the Blessed Damien Parrish building fund on Molokai. When asked what inspired him to have the art sale, Bob explained," I recently visited Molokai and was impressed by the fact that all their parish buildings were old, and several were in need of replacement. I discovered that they have a building fund for the creation of a new church. Since the portraits that Jimmy had donated were of Father Damien, I decided to make it a Father Damien theme art sale." Jimmy Tablante is an artist and our parishioner who created and donated several Father Damien portraits to sell for fundraising. There were many pieces of art donated generously by Dwayne and Minerva Barnhart, which included paintings, prints, and art objects that they had collected over the years. Some are original creations by their daughter, Gigi. Bob contributed several pieces himself, including one that he commissioned from a Colorado artist, Catharine Robles-Shaw, who is a Santera; an artist who paints images of the Saints using natural woods and paints of the American Southwest. She did her first and only portrait of Father Damien for our sale. There was even something for a little boy, who found himself spellbound by the beauty of art; he managed to find a small statue of a carved wooden saint to bring home. Father Paul who happened to be near the boy kindly explained to him that what he held in his hands was a statue of St. Anthony. Now, are you grinding your teeth because you missed the opportunity to be a part of this amazing art sale? No worries. Bob is already planning to have a used book sale in a few months. You can bet that it is going to be very interesting. (Photographed is Bob Mace.)
